WHAT IS A CV JOINT OR DRIVE AXLE

CV joints are constantly velocity joints. They’re part of the front-wheel-drive system or an all-wheel-drive assembly. Firstly, the CV joint lets the shaft transfer power to the wheel from the transmission while you change the angle. For example, think of it as a drive shaft that gets pushed up and down as the car turns corners or goes over bumps. There are two on each side of your car. One CV joint is next to the transmission on the inside, and the other CV joint is next to the wheel’s hub on the outside.

HOW DOES A MERCEDES CV JOINT WORK?

First, you have to know that your CV axle runs between the wheel hub and your transmission, and it features one CV joint on each end of the axle shaft. The joints accommodate several angles and movements that the axle has to perform as part of your vehicle’s front-wheel-drive system. Additionally, this is a universal joint that gets housed in a cup. So, the cup allows the joint to flex in different directions and slide in and out while the axle spins. In turn, your Mercedes can travel over any bumps in your way while allowing you to turn the steering wheel.

SYMPTOMS OF A BAD CV JOINT, BOOT, OR DRIVE AXLE

If you have a broken CV axle or a total CV joint failure, you’ll have a good idea that something is wrong. Luckily, there are several indicators that you need a Mercedes CV joint replacement. Most importantly, you’ll want to tell our staff of any issues you have when you first bring your car into our shop so we can look at your Mercedes drive axle boot. A few of the main symptoms of a broken CV axle include:

Bouncing

If you have an issue with a CV torn boot, you could notice that your car bounces when you drive it. Unfortunately, this bouncing will happen even when you’re on a level and flat surface when you have a CV joint failure.

Greasy Tires

Have you noticed oil or residue on the edges of your tires? If so, it could be that your Mercedes CV joint is leaking. As a result, this residue is from the lubrication that is usually inside the joint to keep it running smoothly. Fortunately, this usually means you have smaller damage to your CV joint, particularly a CV torn boot. So, a small crack or tear in the boot will allow oil to leak out.

Knocking Sounds

Knocking sounds will appear as you’re driving in a straight line. So, one way to check it is to put your car in reverse and accelerate before you slow down. Ideally, you’ll try this out a few times. When you do, go faster and slower while listening for this knocking sound. If you hear it when you do these tests, you probably need a Mercedes CV joint replacement or repair.

Popping or Clicking Noise When I Turn

These two sounds indicate that you have a broken or worn-out CV joint. To test it, get into an open space where you can turn your vehicle in a full circle. Drive the car in a circle and listen for clicking or popping. If you hear it, you most likely have an issue with this joint.

Vibrating

A broken CV axle won’t balance properly. So, your car will vibrate when you drive. The faster you go, the more it’ll vibrate. Unfortunately, it can vibrate hard enough that it’s difficult to control the vehicle. This is dangerous, so you want to fix it as soon as you can.

WHY DO CV JOINTS FAIL?

Typically, your CV joint comes built to last as long as your car does. However, road debris can cause the rubber on your Mercedes drive axle boot to tear. As a result, the boot fails due to grease leakage and the axle’s movements. Dirt and water gets in and causes the bearings to fail. The longer you let it go, the worse the damage can get.

IS IT SAFE TO DRIVE ON A BAD CV JOINT?

Simply put, it’s unsafe to drive when you need a CV joint repair. If your car is still driveable and it hasn’t been completely damaged, it’ll eventually get to the point where the car is uncontrollable, or it grinds to a halt. As a result, you could lose control of the vehicle and get into an accident. The best thing you can do is get it in as soon as you can.
